Amazon UK has announced plans to create 1,500 new apprenticeships at locations nationwide.

The online retail giant says that the new opportunities for UK appendices will all be filled this year and around 13 per cent of the vacancies will be degree level apprenticeships.

Amazon apprenticeships cover a wide range of around 40 different programmes, including:

• Engineering

• Environmental, social & corporate governance

• Health & safety

• Marketing

• Publishing

• Retail

In addition to the 1,500 apprenticeships on offer in 2022, Amazon is also looking to fill at least 1,000 further full and part time positions in the UK this year.

Launching the recruitment drive for hundreds of new apprentices, John Boumphrey, the country manager for Amazon UK said: “We want to be the employer that helps people take their careers to the next level, whether you're just starting your first job or making a career change, in every community that we serve across the UK.”

“We are proud to have created 1,500 apprenticeships which will help even more people get the skills that are in demand in today's labour market,” added Mr Boumphrey.

Welcoming the announcement, Kwasi Kwarteng, the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, said: “With the vast majority of Amazon's workforce located outside of London and the South East, these additional 2,500 jobs highlight the success of our Plan for Jobs in helping to ensure greater opportunities across the country.”

“The news is testament to the strength of the British economy, with GDP back at pre-pandemic levels, employee numbers at record highs and unemployment falling,” added the Business Secretary.

The chief executive of the Institute of Student Employers, Stephen Isherwood, also commented, saying that Amazon’s announcement reflects what they are hearing from other employers, namely that ‘apprentice training routes deliver an increasingly important source of talent.’
