Nissan Creates 100 Apprenticeships For Young People In Sunderland

Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has announced plans to create 100 new apprenticeships for young people in Sunderland.

Over the years, Nissan has launched the careers of over 2,000 apprentices - and this month the car maker is taking dozens more young people onto its apprenticeship scheme.

The apprenticeships will consist of a mix of hands-on work experience along with classroom time.

A range of paid positions will be on offer, with vacancies in Nissan’s business administration, maintenance, manufacturing and quality functions.

Damian Wheeler, the current Maintenance and Engineering Director at Nissan Sunderland himself started out as an apprentice at the plant 35 years ago.

Commenting at the launch of the latest recruitment drive for apprentices in Sunderland, Mr Wheeler said: “Back in 1987 what appealed to me most was the opportunity to learn and earn at the same time. Nissan was new to the North East and the opportunities they had available were fantastic.”

“Fast forward 35 years and we’re embarking on the EV36Zero [the company’s new Electric Vehicle Hub] journey to electrification with the launch of a new electric vehicle, a battery gigafactory as well as a world-first renewable energy microgrid. There’s never been a more exciting time to join the plant,” added the Engineering Director.

Offering some reasons why you might want to join Nissan as an apprentice, the company’s careers website says:

“An apprenticeship at Nissan is like no other. Our schemes offer you the chance to kickstart your career with a real taste of what life is like working at a world-leading car manufacturer.”

“It’s a challenging role but you’ll have support every step of the way and be rewarded with a competitive salary (increasing every six months based on performance) alongside opportunities to socialise and get involved with the wider business.”

“Many of our apprentices progress to full-time roles at Nissan, so it’s a fantastic option for people interested in a stable and long-term career with us.”
