Greggs, the bakery chain, is to create 500 new full or part time jobs in the UK this year.

The high street favourite, perhaps most famous for its sausage rolls, is heading off on an expansion round which will see the chain open around 100 new outlets this year.

Greggs, based in Newcastle, will advertise an average of 5 new vacancies with each new store launch as the company recovers from reduced trading since the outset of the COVID pandemic.

Currently, Greggs operates from around 2,115 stores across the UK but hopes to reach 2,600 by the end of 2021. Eventually, the bakery chain has ambitions to serve customers pies, pastries and other consumables from over 3,000 locations in England, Scotland and Wales.

Announcing the expansion plans, the chief executive officer of Greggs, Roger Whiteside, said: “Greggs once again showed its resilience in a challenging first half, emerging from the lockdown months in a strong position and rebuilding sales as social restrictions were progressively relaxed.”

“We continue to make good progress with our strategic priorities, growing the shop estate and investing in our digital capabilities to compete in all channels and parts of our market. Whilst there continue to be general uncertainties in the market, given our recent performance we now expect full-year profit to be slightly ahead of our previous expectation,” added Mr Whiteside.

Commenting on the announcement, the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s chief executive officer, Chris Daly, said: “Throughout the pandemic, we've seen Greggs work hard to adapt its services and operations to keep up with the changing consumer habits and these interim results show its hard work is now paying off.”

“Innovations like offering a click and collect service, and a partnership with Just Eat, have made it easier for consumers to continue buying Greggs' products even throughout lockdown,” added Mr Daly.
