American burger chain McDonald’s has announced expansion plans which will see the fast food giant open 50 new branches in the UK and Ireland, whilst also creating over 20,000 new full or part time jobs.

McDonald’s says it will be setting up stall in dozens of new locations over the next twelve months and will be hiring in the thousands across existing outlets too.

The franchise-modelled chain already provides jobs for around 130,000 people in the UK and Ireland, but McDonald’s will increase its headcount over here by more than 15 per cent in the next year.

The company currently manages around 1,400 restaurants in the UK and Ireland but will add dozens more outlets before next summer as the recovery from COVID gets underway.

Announcing the expansion plans and recruitment drive, the Chief Executive Officer for McDonald's in the UK and Ireland, Paul Pomroy, said: “It's fantastic to be able to offer an additional 20,000 people an opportunity to work with us. There is no doubt the pandemic has had a huge impact on many people's employment opportunities and threatened the future of high streets up and down the country.”

“Our 1,400 restaurants are run by 200 local franchisees which means we have a personal stake in every one of our communities. It's a big responsibility, and the moves we've announced today reflect our commitment to continue to innovate and invest in the local communities and economies we serve," added Mr Pomroy.
