Construction Sector Set To Create Over 200,000 UK Apprenticeships & Jobs

The construction sector could create over 200,000 jobs and apprenticeships in the UK, according to a new forecast from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

The new research, in a Construction Skills Network (CSN) report by the CITB, estimates that the building industry could create as many as 217,000 vacancies before the end of 2026.

That amounts to an average of more than 43,000 construction jobs and apprenticeships for each of the next five years.

The report also forecasts that the construction sector will hit pre-COVID 19 employment levels before the end of next year and suggests that the industry needs to start recruiting again now.

The East Midlands is the area expected to gain the most new construction vacancies, with an expected increase of 1.7 per cent each year. Neighbouring West Midlands will also benefit from an extra 1.4 per cent of added construction vacancies per year, according to the CSN report.

Announcing the latest forecasts for the industry, Steve Radley, the policy director for CITB said:

“It’s great to see construction coming back so strongly and creating lots of job opportunities. We need to adopt new approaches to meet these growing skills needs and deliver these quickly. We are working closely with the government and Further Education (FE) to build better bridges between FE and work and make apprenticeships more flexible.”

“We are also making significant investments in supporting work experience that make it easier for employers to bring in new blood. We must also make sure that we invest in the skills that will drive change and meet new and growing needs such as net-zero emissions and building safety.”

“We will be announcing plans soon to tackle specific skills and occupations such as leadership and management, digital skills and skills related to energy efficiency,” added Mr Radley.
