The UK government’s Home Office is creating over 500 apprenticeships and jobs in Stoke-on-Trent with the launch of an immigration innovation hub in the Staffordshire city.

The Potteries city is benefitting from the government’s decision to create thousands of public centre jobs outside of London and other parts of South East England.

The Home Office already boasts around 2 in 5 jobs outside of London and the South East, but has committed to creating almost 2,000 new regional central government jobs in the next few years.

Likewise, the government’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has also pledged to create almost 900 regional vacancies so that nearly a third of their staff will be based outside of London before the end of 2025.

In addition to Stoke-on-Trent, other towns and cities earmarked to benefit from the UK government’s trend towards decentralisation of civil service and other public sector government vacancies include Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Darlington, Edinburgh, Manchester, Peterborough, Salford and Solihull.

Commenting on the developments, Kwasi Kwarteng, the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, said: “We are doubling down on our commitment to level up every region of the UK, so that every part of the country can share in the UK’s future prosperity.”

“Our policy developers and decision-makers must reflect the communities they serve. Relocating these civil service roles will ensure that central government hears the voice of local communities louder and clearer than ever before, while creating hubs of economic opportunity and growth across the UK.,” added Mr Kwarteng.

Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, also commented, saying: “Day in, day out, thousands of Home Office staff work tirelessly to keep the public safe, cut crime and improve our immigration system.”

“It is so important that they represent the communities they serve, and by creating 500 new Home Office jobs in Stoke-on-Trent, the government is delivering on its promise to level up communities across the country and build a safer, fairer and more prosperous UK.”

“This isn't just about reallocating existing civil service jobs from London. We are going to be creating opportunities for young people in Stoke-on-Trent, with an apprentice first policy and a career ladder to support social mobility. There will be jobs in cutting edge technology, the sort of technology which will ensure we can deliver the big reforms which are needed,” added Ms Patel.

As well as targeting young people via the apprenticeship route, Ms Patel also confirmed that the Home Office will be working with local universities in order to get more graduates from the area to apply for jobs within the department.

Local MPs welcomed the news, with Jonathan Gullis for Stoke-on-Trent North in particular championing public sector jobs coming to the region.

“I am thrilled with today’s announcement that, following the campaign I have led in Westminster, more than 500 civil service jobs will be coming to Stoke-on-Trent. To have secured such a presence for the Home Office, one of the big beasts of government, will be truly transformational for Stoke-on-Trent,” said Mr Gullis.

Jack Brereton, MP for Stoke-on-Trent South, also commented, saying: “Confirmation that the Home Office will be relocating jobs to Stoke-on-Trent is fantastic news. This is a vote of confidence in our city and its highly-skilled workforce.”

Finally, Jo Gideon, the MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, added: “It's been fantastic to see the strong community support for our efforts to secure more government jobs in our city, and I am delighted that our campaign has been successful. This move by the Home Office is a massive boost to our city. It will mean many great new opportunities for local people in the coming years."
