Ofcom, the UK’s government-approved regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications and postal sectors, is creating 150 new tech jobs in Manchester.

The move comes as Ofcom is taking on responsibility for the regulation of internet firms in the UK as part of the government’s Online Safety Bill.

Ofcom will launch a brand new tech hub in Manchester this summer and will create an average of around 30 to 40 tech, digital, data and cybersecurity jobs per year in the city until 2025.

Ofcom said it was looking to benefit from what it described as Manchester’s ‘huge array of tech, digital and data talent.’

The UK government’s Online Safety Bill is due to come before Parliament this year and aims to further regulate the use of harmful content by tech and internet companies.

Any firms found to be in breach of the new duty-of-care-to-users rules will face penalties such as fines and Ofcom blocking access to their websites and apps.

Announcing the new vacancies in the North West city, Melanie Dawes, the chief executive of Ofcom, said: “We’re delighted to be preparing for a new digital and technology hub in Manchester.”

“We want to tap into the huge array of tech, digital and data talent in the city as we prepare for pioneering new work around online safety and security,” added Ms Dawes.

As well as opening up the 150 vacancies with the launch of its new Manchester tech hub, Ofcom also said it would be expanding its existing operations in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast.
