Sainsbury’s has announced recruitment plans which will see the retailer creating around 12,000 Christmas jobs for the 2020 holidays.

The number of seasonal supermarket jobs on offer for the festive period at Sainsbury’s this year is double the amount that the chain took on as temps last year.

The hiring spree comes after a surge in online orders during the pandemic and Sainsbury’s is now expecting to have to process around 750,000 online orders every week this month.

All of the nationwide roles pay at least £9.30 per hour, with higher wages of up to an extra 60p per hour on offer for students in and around the London area.

Roles on offer include delivery drivers and staff who will pick and pack customers’ orders from within stores.

Announcing the festive recruitment drive, the Director of Retail and Digital at Sainsbury’s, Clo Moriarty, said: “This Christmas will be like no other and the way customers want to shop for their celebrations has changed completely. To help them find everything they need and shop how they want, we’re recruiting thousands more Christmas colleagues than in previous years.”

“The roles will receive the highest rate of pay of the major supermarkets while supporting in our superstores and helping fulfil online grocery orders, where we’ve more than doubled capacity since March.”

“For customers who want to get in and out of stores quickly, our SmartShop app is now in over 1,100 stores. We’re doing everything we can to make Christmas special for our customers and we’re asking them to play their part by shopping early and shopping alone, wherever possible. This will really help everyone spend less time queuing and more time celebrating,” added Ms Moriarty.
