Amazon Creating 900 Warehouse Jobs For Christmas 2020

Online retailer Amazon has said it is going to create 900 warehouse jobs in the East Midlands for the Christmas 2020 period.

The e-commerce giant also says that a further 400 permanent vacancies are to be filled in the region, increasing its headcount in the area by more than 13 per cent from 3,000 permanent staff to 3,400 before the end of the year.

The 900 Christmas vacancies will be split between Amazon’s East Midlands’ four ‘fulfilment centres’ at Chesterfield, Coalville, Kegworth and Sutton-in-Ashfield, with actual numbers yet to be confirmed.

Most of the 900 warehouse jobs are for ‘pickers, packers & shippers’ to expedite an expected surge in orders in the run up to Xmas 2020 and beyond.

Some of the 400 permanent positions to be filled include vacancies within the company’s engineering, Human Resources, IT, finance, health & safety and operations functions.

Announcing the jobs boost, Jonatan Gal, the operations director for Amazon UK, said: “Since 2010, we’ve made direct investments in our UK operations of more than £23 billion. This includes both capital expenditure, such as the infrastructure we build - including our fulfilment centres - and operating expenditure, such as the jobs we create in the UK.”

“Amazon prioritises the safety and health of its employees and has invested millions of pounds to provide a safe workplace. Our operation has grown significantly in the East Midlands, where the chamber of commerce has done so much for businesses of all sizes and sectors.”

“We’re looking forward to working more closely with East Midlands Chamber and the wider business community,” added Mr Gal.

The chief executive of East Midlands Chamber, Scott Knowles, welcomed the announcement from Amazon, saying: “The East Midlands is becoming a national, and indeed international, hub for logistics. And Amazon is one of our shining lights within a sector that has thrived during the pandemic.”

“It’s great to see global firms setting down roots in the region and at a time when the employment market is facing many challenges, a significant number of high-quality jobs are being created by the likes of Amazon.”

“It offers a great place to work with highly competitive pay, benefits from day one and training programmes for in-demand jobs,” added Mr Knowles.
