Royal Mail has said it will be creating 33,000 Christmas jobs for the festive period in 2020.
In typical years, Royal Mail only hires around 20,000 temps for the Xmas holidays but the increase in online shopping, fuelled by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, has led the delivery firm to increase its recruitment plans for this year.
The drive for temporary workers means that Royal Mail will be looking for a record number of Christmas staff in 2020, around 65 per cent more than in previous years.
Many of the seasonal vacancies start as early as the end of next month and will run through the New Year into the January sales period. However, the majority of the temps will be working for Royal Mail in December, their busiest month.
15,000 of the Royal Mail Christmas staff will work in UK sorting offices, with 13,000 vacancies in England, 1,400 positions in Scotland, 700 opportunities in Wales and 500 jobs in Northern Ireland.
17,000 more will be delivering parcels, letters and other items, whilst 1,000 will be recruited to collect Covid-19 testing kits from people’s doorsteps.
Finally, there will also be some temporary data entry roles on offer at Royal Mail, although we don’t have exact figures on those at the time of writing.
Speaking at the launch of this year’s recruitment drive for Christmas temps, the chief human resources officer for Royal Mail, Sally Ashford, said: “During these unprecedented times we believe it is critical that Royal Mail continues to deliver. We want to do our best to deliver Christmas for our customers and support the effort on the pandemic. This helps the whole country to celebrate and stay safe during these difficult times.”
