Photocentric Creates 100 Coronavirus Jobs In Peterborough

3D printing specialist Photocentric is creating 100 new Coronavirus jobs in Peterborough after securing an order to make millions of face shields during the pandemic.

The UK government has placed an order for almost 8 million items to supply health care workers on the front line of the Covid-19 crisis.

Photocentric will have the capacity to make half a million face shields per day but needs dozens of new staff in Peterborough to help them reach their target.

The company currently employs 120 people in Peterborough, so the new staff will almost double the headcount at the Photocentric facility in Cambridge House on Oxney Road.

Announcing the recruitment drive for staff in Peterborough, Photocentric’s founder and managing director, Paul Holt, said: “I am proud of the ingenuity and hard work demonstrated by the whole team. We have shown that it is possible to use our patented 3D printing technology to very rapidly design and make millions of units of an entirely new product.”

“This home-grown, patented technology demonstrates that the UK can reduce dependence on overseas production and manufacture parts locally, making the quantity needed, when they are needed, at a competitive price.”

“Producing face shields has enabled Photocentric to demonstrate that it is possible to use their technology to rapidly manufacture very high volumes of plastic parts at a price that competes with traditional manufacturing processes. It is no longer reserved for slow, expensive prototyping applications but can produce hundreds of thousands of parts per day,” added Mr Holt.

In addition to the immediate 100 jobs that have been created at Photocentric, the company has also received £1.8 million in funding from the Combined Authority for Peterborough and Cambridgeshire. The cash injection could be used to create a UK centre of excellence for 3D printing which could potentially create a further 570 jobs down the line.
