Honeywell To Create 450 Coronavirus Jobs In Scotland

The US aviation and aerospace firm Honeywell is to create 450 new jobs in Scotland as the company starts to manufacture PPE (personal protective equipment) for the UK government during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Honeywell has secured a deal to supply 70 million masks over the course of 18 months starting from July.

The company will manufacture the equipment at its Newhouse base in North Lanarkshire, creating hundreds of jobs for students and other members of the public in the region.

Honeywell says it has the capacity to produce over 4 million disposable face masks every month once their new production line is up and running at the Scottish facility.

The news follows the North Carolina-based company setting up production lines for PPE in the United States over the last few weeks. Now, Honeywell will soon be a leading provider of PPE to the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care and workers on the frontline of the NHS and care homes.

Commenting on the recruitment drive, president of the PPE arm of Honeywell’s business, Will Lange, said: “As a global leader of high quality personal protective equipment, Honeywell is committed to getting safety gear to those who need it most, including workers on the front line of the fight against COVID-19.”

“Our Newhouse facility has both the physical capacity and technical capabilities to launch a large-scale respirator production line in such a short timeframe. We are proud of our teams who are bringing new manufacturing capabilities to the United Kingdom as quickly as possible to support the country’s response to the pandemic,” added Mr Lange.

Announcing the new deal and the jobs it will create, the UK’s Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, said: “These 70 million masks are the result of our challenge to UK industry to scale-up domestic PPE manufacturing. This deal is brilliant news for the whole United Kingdom, which will not only deliver the masks we need but create around 450 jobs in Newhouse, Scotland.”

“I’m delighted to team up with Honeywell to open up another avenue to get millions of masks to the frontline and strengthen our ongoing response to the outbreak,” added Mr Hancock.
