Aldi has submitted plans for a new supermarket and business facilities which could create around 400 new full or part time jobs in Suffolk.
The multi million pound development on the Suffolk Park Enterprise Zone in West Suffolk’s Bury St Edmunds is to feature an Aldi food store, along with business, retail and commercial space for cafes, sandwich bars, shops and admin centres.
There is already one branch of Aldi in Bury St Edmunds, but it is in the west side of town on Dettingen Way. Aldi believes that a second discount food store in the east of the town would complement the first, and would create 400 new jobs for locals and students in the area.
Aldi is working on the Suffolk Park plans with Jaynic, an entrepreneurial property development and investment company.
Commenting on the proposals, Ben Oughton, the development director for Jaynic said: “We are delighted to be working on this joint venture with Aldi to give the east side of Bury St Edmunds a much-needed sustainable mixed-use scheme for both the local community and the growing number of businesses on Suffolk Park.”
“The requirement for an innovation centre and retail and commercial kiosks alongside the store is clear and will bring more of a balance in the provision of amenities to Bury St Edmunds that is currently skewed towards the west of the town,” added Mr Oughton.
Aldi has canvassed the opinions of locals to see if they are behind the proposals and say that ‘overwhelming’ support, with more than 9 in 10 respondents were in favour of the plans going ahead.
A spokesperson for Aldi thanked Bury St Edmunds’ locals for their support and added, “We are delighted to be able to partner with Jaynic to bring these exciting proposals forward, we now look forward to working with West Suffolk Council throughout the application process.”
