Increased demand for Walkers Crisps during Coronavirus lockdown has led the snack firm to create over 200 new temporary jobs in Leicester, Coventry & Lincoln.

The factory jobs in the three student cities are all advertised for immediate start and no previous experience of working on production lines is necessary as Walkers will provide full training.

The famous Leicester-brand says it is offering the temporary contracts during what it describes as a ‘challenging time’ for UK workers and consumers.

There are 150 jobs available in Leicester, 80 vacancies in Coventry and further temporary opportunities up for grabs in Lincoln.

With 1,350 staff currently working at the Leicester facility, the recruitment of 150 temporary workers in the city will amount to a more than 10 per cent increase in their headcount at the factory in order to keep up with excess COVID-19 demand.

Announcing the new temporary jobs, a spokesperson for Walkers said: “We are looking for people to help support our key workers in Leicester - and also Coventry and Lincoln - who are helping to maintain food supply at this critical time. We’re pleased to be offering employment opportunities in the local area.”

“The health and safety of our teams is extremely important to us. We have extended our already rigorous standards to account for the additional challenges we face at this time. We are adhering to the latest government advice to provide a safe working environment, following social distancing protocols and cleaning regimes of increased frequency and stringency,” added the Walkers’ spokesperson.

Describing the different types of roles on offer at Walkers Crisps factories, Aneel Savania, a general operative (GO) at Leicester’s Beaumont Leys factory, said: “A GO's role may cover four main areas; there is process, primary, multi-pack and services.”

“Process is where we take the potatoes in, fry them and season them. We have to monitor the seasoning for different flavours. Primary actually produces the single packets and Services distribute raw materials to the machines.”

“I actually work in multi-packs, where we put single primary packets into a bigger outer bag. It's a good, busy place to work. There can be manual handling, but it's not all day. If you're packing you will be doing the same thing for half-an-hour at a time.”

“What I like about my job here as a GO is that I'm challenged every day. There's always something to do and you are always on the go. It's a very diverse place to work and we have many different people from different backgrounds,” added Mr Savania.

As well as the eponymous Walkers brand, new recruits could also be producing bags and bags of other famous snacks under the same Pepsico parent company umbrella, such as Doritos, Frazzles, French Fries, Monster Munch, Quavers and Wotsits.
