A massive new £30 million commercial and logistics development in Darlington could create as many as 800 new full or part time jobs in the North East, according to developers Lichfields.

The plans for the development, which will cover an area of almost 60,000 square metres at Darlington’s Morton Park, have been given the green light by Darlington Borough Council.

In addition to commercial and logistics space, the plans also include provisions for eateries, a pub, a hotel and a petrol station.

The site will be in close proximity to the Amazon fulfilment centre in Darlington which has created 1,000 new jobs for the North East.

Announcing the new jobs in Darlington, Dominic Holding, a senior planner at the site’s developer Lichfields, said: “The site is in an excellent location next to the A66; it is likely to prove attractive to potential operators and will enhance the on-going, adjacent, developments.”

“This is a key approval for the town and wider area, which could help create hundreds of new jobs and provide a major boost to the economy,” added Mr Holding.

Lichfields say that around 140 construction jobs will be created in order to build the development over the next two years.

At least a further 715 bar jobs & restaurant vacancies, hotel roles and other jobs will be created upon completion, with the potential for over 800 positions once the site is fully operational.
