Fintech firm Starling Bank has announced plans to create at least 400 new full or part time jobs in Cardiff with the opening of a new hub in the Welsh capital.

The digital finance company will launch new facilities in Cardiff’s city centre Brunel House at the start of next week.

The 400 new jobs will consist of a mix of roles including customer service positions, data science vacancies and fraud operatives.

The positions are to be filled by the end of this year but Starling says they have enough capacity at Brunel House to continue further recruitment in Cardiff beyond 2020.

Starling will join other fintech firms who have invested in offices in the Welsh capital, including Delio Wealth, Monzo and Wealthify.

Announcing the new jobs in Cardiff, Starling Bank’s founder and chief executive, Anne Boden said: “The Welsh tech sector is one of the fastest digital economies outside of London, and continues to grow. Cardiff is also a bright, dynamic and entrepreneurial city with a supportive ecosystem which we are looking to tap into as we continue to grow our business and personal accounts.”

“We believe that London’s success as a fintech hub should enable it to spread wealth and jobs throughout the UK and the wider economy. That’s exactly what we’re doing with this office in Cardiff,” added Ms Boden.

Ken Skates, the Welsh Economy and Transport Minister, welcomed the new jobs from the fintech firm, saying: “I am absolutely delighted to welcome Starling Bank to Wales. Our thriving ecosystem has seen a number of companies make the move to Wales following Welsh Government advice and support, and it’s fantastic Starling has decided to do the same, creating 400 new jobs with more to come.”

“As a government, we can be rightly proud of our role in growing the financial and related professional services sector in what is a very competitive global business environment,” added Mr Skates.

The new round of recruitment in Cardiff marks a significant increase in the company’s headcount. They currently employ around 900 members of staff at their existing London and Southampton bases. Once the Cardiff recruitment drive is complete, Starling will have boosted their overall headcount in the UK by almost 50 per cent.
