Retailer Skopes has has announced high street expansion plans which will see the Leeds-based firm create 200 new full or part time jobs across the UK.

The menswear specialist has received £6 million in funding from HSBC and will use some of the investment to open 15 new stores around the country.

The 200 jobs will be a mix of retail vacancies, office roles and warehouse positions at Skopes. The company expects all of the new vacancies to be advertised before the end of 2023.

Currently, Skopes employs around 300 people in the UK, so the new recruitment drive will see the firm increase its headcount by almost 70 per cent over the next two or three years.

Explaining the reasons behind the expansion plans, Skopes’ owner and managing director, Simon Cope, said: “2018 was a big year for us. Seventy years after the business was founded by my grandfather, Sydney Cope, we completely re-branded and the energy this brought propelled our growth forward.”

“While cultivating a strong digital following is key for us, we believe bricks and mortar stores still have a hugely relevant role in the retail landscape. We want to capitalise on this by rolling out 15 new stores nationwide.”

“The HSBC UK funding will enable us to create stores that respond to consumer demand and trends which is imperative if we are to remain relevant and attractive to our ever-changing market,” added Mr Cope.

A spokesperson for the firm added: “This rapid expansion will support the creation of 200 new jobs, across retail, warehouse and office roles; the biggest growth phase the company has seen since its inception in 1948.”

The Relationship Director for HSBC UK in the North and West Yorkshire, Helen Phillips, also commented, saying: “We’re delighted to be supporting a fantastic Yorkshire business in such a large stage of development. The opening of more UK stores shows the ambition of Skopes to further establish itself as a recognised household name.”
