The US construction firm Jacobs has announced plans to create 2,400 engineering jobs, apprenticeships and graduate vacancies across the UK.

Jacobs is to open its first European headquarters in London in a move which will create hundreds of opportunities for young people and experienced workers.

As well as creating around 1,000 jobs in the UK capital, a further 1,400 vacancies at Jacobs will be spread across other parts of the country at the company’s thirty existing bases over here.

With Jacobs already employing 9,000 staff in the UK, the recruitment drive for apprentices, graduates and other employees will see the company add more than 25 per cent to existing UK headcount.

Over the last year, Jacobs has recruited around 1,300 people in the UK. Of those, 1 in 3 opportunities were for apprentices, interns and graduates.

The 2,400 new jobs will be created over the course of the next two years and will include a mix of roles across various sectors of the construction and engineering industries.

Jacobs worked on venues for the 2012 Olympics in London and their current UK projects include Crossrail, HS2, Thames Tideway and the Palace of Westminster.

Announcing the hundreds of UK engineering apprenticeships, graduate jobs and other opportunities, the president and chief operating officer of Jacobs, Bob Pragada, said: “Britain is a critical market for Jacobs. This investment is an indication of our ongoing confidence in the UK economy and its long-term infrastructure plans.”

“Our people are helping to tackle some of the UK's most complex challenges to make the future better, delivering projects to safeguard the environment and improve the security, connectivity, resiliency and productivity of the UK,” added Mr Pragada.

Speaking at the opening of the new Jacobs office in the capital, inside the Cottons Centre near London Bridge, Professor Brian Cox said:

“Jacobs’ work to encourage and help young people to build STEM careers is impressive. We are living in an exciting era of scientific discovery and rapid technological change, but we are also facing significant challenges as we try to build a better and sustainable future. What is certain is that the next generation’s jobs will be unrecognisable from those we see today.”
