Hays Travel To Create 1,500 Jobs & Apprenticeships

Hays Travel, the company behind the rescue of many of Thomas Cook’s employees and all of their high street shops, has announced a further 1,500 new jobs and apprenticeships in the UK.

Hays will take on one new apprentice at each of its existing UK travel branches creating almost 750 apprenticeships for young people who want to find a way in to a career in the sector.

A further 500 jobs will be created for employees to deal with foreign currencies and there will be over 200 new recruits at the company’s headquarters in Sunderland.

Hays Travel already employs 500 staff in Sunderland and a further 3,700 across the UK. Once the 1,500 new positions are filled, the company will have increased its headcount by more than a third to become an employer of around 5,700 people.

Explaining why his company was recruiting in such big numbers, the travel firm’s managing director, John Hays, said: “We’re further increasing staffing to ensure we have the highest customer service levels across all of our stores and our head office functions.”

“These are fantastic permanent career opportunities for people who want to take a step into an exciting industry where every day is different. You don’t necessarily need travel experience, just an enthusiasm for travel, a good head for numbers for the foreign exchange posts and some customer service experience of any kind would be helpful,” added Mr Hays.

And, commenting on the apprentice roles in particular, Mr Hays added: “We have always recruited, supported and developed young people. They are the future of our industry. We are looking forward to expanding our apprenticeship programme and making sure there’s at least one travel apprentice on most of the UK’s high streets.”

Regarding the head office roles, Mr Hays said: “I’m delighted that we will create 200 more permanent jobs in the heart of Sunderland’s city centre, joining 500 people already at our newly-opened head office building. They will have the same empowerment and trust that we give all of our colleagues.”
