BAE Systems, the British multinational defence, security and aerospace firm, has announced plans to create 350 apprenticeships and 50 graduate jobs in Cumbria before the end of next year.

The new recruits will work at BAE Systems’ facility at Barrow-in-Furness and there will also be a recruitment drive for a further 500 experienced roles, with a total of 900 vacancies on offer before the end of 2020.

BAE Systems has been recruiting quickly at their Barrow submarine base, almost doubling its headcount at the facility over the course of seven years. Next year alone will see them add a further 10 per cent to their ranks at the base, to see the group employing almost 10,000 in Barrow by the end of next year.

The apprentices and graduates will work alongside engineers overseeing the company’s Astute and Dreadnought submarines which can be over 150 metres in length and stay submerged for around three months at a time.

Since 2013, BAE Systems has spent over £500 million at the Barrow-in-Furness base, including the launch of a new £25 million submarine school for training engineers at the end of last year.

In 2019, BAE Systems hired a similar number of new recruits at Barrow, taking on 1,000 staff over the course of twelve months. Nationwide, BAE provides jobs for more than 30,000 people in a very wide variety of roles.

Explaining why they were looking for even more fresh talent in Cumbria, BAE’s acting group managing director for the maritime and land division, Glynn Phillips, said: “Our continued investment in skills and infrastructure ensures we are well-placed to deliver cutting-edge technology and capability for the Royal Navy and to help safeguard national security for decades.”
