EICC Hosting Student Open Day For Events Jobs

Today, Friday 4th October 2019, will see the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) host a student open day for events jobs.

It will be the second time the EICC have held the Student Open Day and it looks like becoming a regular annual event at the Edinburgh venue.

The open day aims to help students learn about the many and varied opportunities within the £40 billion events and hospitality sector. Last year over 350 people attended the open day and organisers are hoping to attract even more students to the EICC today.

Insiders of the events industry say that indicate the number of skilled jobs in hospitality is increasing, but the level of knowledge about the jobs on offer is lacking. The EICC open day hopes to redress the balance and help university, college and school students into a long and rewarding career in the sector.

Guest speakers from the events and hospitality industry include Bill Thomson from Hello Scotland, Kelly Johnstone from Springboard and Kat Brogan from Mercat Tours. Following their speeches, students will get a tour of the EICC and can take part in a Q&A session with the speakers.

Ahead of today’s event, the EICC’s Sales Executive, Dean Matheson, said: “After the success of our first open day in 2018, we’re looking forward to building on that success this October with our 2019 event, where a diverse speaker line-up will once again highlight to students the various avenues open to them in this exciting industry.”

The Chief Executive of the EICC, Marshall Dallas, also commented, saying: “This event affords a wonderful opportunity to gain insight from a line-up of key industry representatives, who will showcase the diversity of Scotland’s events sector. Business events industry is a fast-growing segment of the Scottish economy but there can often be something of a knowledge gap in terms of the available opportunities and we’re looking to address that.

“The Master’s degree we run with Edinburgh Napier University is one of the only courses of its kind in the UK and that is another part of our commitment to developing the next generation of individuals who want to fast-track their way in the business tourism sector,” added Mr Dallas.

The event will run from 10:15am until 13:30pm today and you can find out more details here if you are interested in attending the open day.
