German discount supermarket chain Aldi is to create 850 new full or part time jobs in Warwickshire.

Aldi is opening a new warehouse and office facilities at its existing Atherstone head office base in Warwickshire and says that the move will create hundreds of jobs for the area.

Atherstone council has recently reviewed the proposals by Aldi and have now given the green light to the two phase project which will be completed over the next five years.

The office space will cover just over 8,000 square metres and the warehouse will give them an extra 11,000 square metres of storage space in Warwickshire. The plans also include a new multi storey car park facility at the Atherstone base which will allow for almost 600 extra vehicles at the site.

Phase one of the plans will create 50 warehouse vacancies and around 375 office jobs. The second phase will add a further 440 office positions at Aldi’s Atherstone head quarters.

Announcing the plans, a statement from Aldi said: “The proposal provides a significant contribution to the region in terms of creating stable long-term jobs, which provide an income that is in excess of existing market rates.”

“This new phase of development will boost the economy, locally, regionally and nationally as the proposal is required to support the ongoing growth of the business which has been expanding year on year since arriving in the UK in 1990.”

Since that arrival in 1990, Aldi has grown its UK portfolio of supermarkets to more than 800 stores and forecasts that it will open at 70 new locations in 2019. Over the next six years, Aldi aims to add an average of 50 supermarkets annually to take it to 1,200 UK stores by the end of 2025.
