Lidl To Create 500 New Supermarket Jobs In Scotland

German discount retailer Lidl is to expand its Scottish operations in a move which it says will create around 500 new full or part time jobs in the country.

Currently Lidl trades from 98 stores in Scotland but will open 12 new supermarkets, creating an average of more than 40 jobs with each launch.

The move will see Lidl shoot through the 100 store landmark during 2020, reaching 110 supermarkets by the end of the current round of expansion in Scotland.

New Scottish branches of Lidl are anticipated in Cowdenbeath, Dumbarton, Dundee, East Kilbride, Larkhall and other areas of the country.

The announcement comes just weeks after Lidl said they would be creating 1,500 jobs in Greater London.

Commenting on the recruitment drive north of the border, Ross Millar, regional director for Lidl, said: “Since opening our very first store in Scotland 25 years ago, we’ve opened our doors to towns and cities across the country, employing more than 2,200 people.”

“We’re incredibly excited by our ambitious growth plans, and in particular the opening of our 100th store next year, which reinforces our commitment to creating new jobs and providing communities with quality produce at prices that are affordable for everyone,” added Mr Millar.
