Plans for a new multi-million pound Lidl could create dozens of full and part time jobs in Huddersfield if the council grants permission for the development.

Bosses of the German discount supermarket chain say that around 40 vacancies would be up for grabs at the proposed development on New Hey Road in the Salendine Nook area of Huddersfield.

A recent presentation of the proposals by Lidl garnered the support of more than 4 in 5 local resident attendees and the full plans will now be submitted to Kirklees Council next month.

Commenting on the proposals and the jobs it would create for the area, Head of Property for Lidl UK, Graham Burr, said: “We have received an incredible amount of support from the local community and are excited at the prospect of bringing a new store to Huddersfield. If granted, this would mark a multi-million pound investment in the area and the creation of new jobs when the store opens.”

“We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support and feedback so far and look forward to receiving a decision in due course,” added Mr Burr.

Planning and development consultancy Lichfields has been enlisted by Lidl to liaise with Kirklees Council in order to get a green light on the project.

Putting forward some early reasons why the new Lidl would be a net benefit for Huddersfield locals, Lichfields’ senior planner, Adam Jackson, said: “This new development will breathe new life into the area and regenerate a site which has recently been a magnet for vandals.”

“The consultation event has shown there is strong support for the development. It will provide new shopping and employment opportunities for local people and improve the visual appearance of the area by bringing the vacant site back into active use,” added Mr Jackson.
