Facebook has added its name to the UK government’s ‘Year of Engineering’ campaign and will help disadvantaged kids to learn skills which could help them win a career in the sector.
As part of their commitment, Facebook will offer monthly one-on-one mentoring sessions in London to 100 primary school children who show a keen interest in engineering.
The Year of Engineering programme has provided over three quarters of a million engineering experience to the UK’s young people so far, with help from almost 1,500 partners like Facebook.
The sector is struggling to keep up with the numbers required, with a shortage of around 20,000 engineering graduates each year. Also, there is a lack of diversity in the engineering sector, with only 1 in 8 roles filled by women and fewer than 1 in 12 a black, Asian or ethnic minority background.
Explaining why they are throwing their weight behind the scheme, Facebook’s director of product, Kyle McGinn, said: “Supporting emerging STEM talent is something we are really committed to, which is why we’re pleased to welcome hundreds of aspiring young engineers at our offices today and launch our mentoring programme.”
“We’re proud to say we’ll be hiring hundreds more engineers in the next year as part of our wider investment to the UK and, as we expand, we want to encourage the UK’s next generation of talent as part of our support for Year of Engineering and through our new mentorship program,” added Mr McGinn.
Welcoming Facebook’s commitment to the scheme, Stephen Metcalfe, the UK Government’s ‘Envoy for the Year of Engineering’, said: “Engineering is a creative, trailblazing career that shapes the world around us, yet too many young people are in the dark about the opportunities it offers. Leading technology companies like Facebook play a vital role in inspiring the next generation of engineers and innovators.”
“It is wonderful to see so many young people given the opportunity to discover first-hand what an engineering career could look like,” added Mr Metcalfe.
