Lidl To Create 500 New Full & Part Time Jobs In Leeds

German discount supermarket chain Lidl is to open their 17th distribution centre in the UK, creating a potential 500 new full and part time jobs in Leeds.

The new Lidl regional distribution centre will be built in the Gildersome area of Leeds on 38 acres of land.

The warehouse and office facility will be around 60,000 square metres in size and will create hundreds of jobs for people in Leeds once it is up and running.

Job vacancies will be advertised nearer to the time with full and part time positions available in the warehouse and the offices.

Lidl now has over 700 supermarkets in the United Kingdom and is fast expanding the number of its distribution hubs to keep up with supply.

Commenting on the new distribution hub, Lidl UK board director for expansion and development, Ingo Fischer, said: “As we continue to open new stores and serve more customers across the country, it’s important that we also continue to build foundations for the future. This latest investment joins a long line of Lidl warehouses set to open over the next seven years, which are all vital in supporting our growth.”

Welcoming the news, Leeds councillor Andy Hutchinson said: “We are extremely happy that 500 jobs are going to be locally sourced and we hope that the development will have minimal impact on the residents of Gildersome.”

Leeds City Council’s executive member for employment, Councillor Jonathan Pryor, also commented, saying: “We welcome Lidl’s investment into Leeds and the job growth that this represents, especially as the company offers competitive hourly rates that are above the UK Living Wage Foundation living wage.”

“Lidl recruits staff at all levels, from limited experience to graduate positions and invests in staff training, enabling people to progress. These are business values that we are really pleased to welcome into our city and hope to continue seeing more of,” added Councillor Pryor.

A spokesman for West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, Mike Cartwright, added: “The chamber welcomes this new investment into Leeds. It will give a further uplift to the city in terms of job creation and local economic development, and increase the big name presence that the city has in retail and many other sectors.”
