Fieldfisher To Create Over 100 New Law Jobs In Belfast

Fieldfisher, a European legal firm based in London and one of the UK’s Top 50 companies, is to create over 100 new law jobs in Belfast, with some positions earmarked for graduates.

At present, Fieldfisher only employs 10 people at its Belfast offices but now plans to recruit a further 125 staff into its legal services, risk management and business support roles.

The total annual wage bill for the new recruits is to be £3.6 million, placing the average annual salary for the 125 new vacancies at over £28,000.

Regional economic development agency, Invest NI, has injected £630,000 into the deal, enabling Fieldfisher to create dozens of jobs over the course of the next three years.

Offering some reasons as to why Belfast is so attractive to law firms, Invest NI’s Chief Executive Officer, Alastair Hamilton said that the city’s pool of graduate talent in law was a ‘massive incentive’.

“Historically the graduates have left here and gone elsewhere and we want to provide an opportunity for some of those legal graduates to find employment with blue-chips firms here in Northern Ireland,” said Mr Hamilton.

"We produce something in the region of 700 law graduates a year in Northern Ireland who will not get a job in a local practice. What we've been trying to do, with the help of firms like Fieldfisher, is provide really high quality, in this case, globally attractive employment for those legal graduates here in Northern Ireland. “

Managing partner at Fieldfisher, Michael Chissick, agreed that the hundreds of ‘experienced and skilled’ law graduates which leave university in Northern Ireland each year were a major draw for them in Belfast.

“The strong partnership between academia and industry was another attraction to investing here and ensures we will be able to work with colleges and universities to develop a future pipeline of qualified graduates,” said Mr Chissick.

“We have been through an incredible period of success and have been the fastest-growing large UK law firm for the last two years. Northern Ireland is the next strategic stage in our continued growth and we are very excited to be able to provide a centre of excellence to support our offices around the world.”

“Our new centre here will include senior positions in legal and risk management, as well as middle level technical and business support roles. We also have a number of roles suitable for graduates,” added Mr Chissick.

Worldwide, Fieldfisher has over 20 offices and employs more than 1,000 people in locations including Amsterdam, Beijing, Birmingham, Bologna, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, London, Luxemburg, Manchester, Munich, Milan, Paris, Rome, Shanghai, Turin, Venice and the USA.
