Amazon To Create 2,500 UK Jobs In 2018

Amazon has confirmed recruitment forecasts for this year and says that it will create 2,500 vacancies in the UK during 2018.

The fresh round of recruitment will see Amazon increase its UK headcount by 10 per cent from 25,000 staff members to 27,500 by the end of the year.

Almost a quarter of the new Amazon jobs will be within its AWS cloud computing services and software development centres in the UK, with approximately 650 positions to be created.

The other 1,850 vacancies will be a mix of full and part time jobs at the retailer’s head office and Amazon’s 16 ‘fulfilment centres’ across the UK.

Amazon also confirmed that around 170 of the fulfilment centre jobs created during 2018 would be a range of apprenticeships for the UK’s young people.

Announcing the jobs, Amazon’s Country Manager for the UK, Doug Gurr, said: “The UK is a fantastic place to do business so we are delighted to continue our investment in the British economy and provide quality, permanent roles for people the length and breadth of the country.”

“Whether you are looking for an entry-level role or in highly-specialised fields such as speech science or machine learning, we are proud to be expanding our UK workforce so we can further improve our products and services like AmazonFresh, Prime Video and Amazon Alexa,” added Mr Gurr.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, welcomed the Amazon announcement, saying: “Supporting businesses to create the high-quality jobs of the future is a key part of our plan to create an economy that works for everyone. Innovative companies, such as Amazon, will be at the forefront of our new economy. And I welcome the news that they are creating 2,500 permanent, new jobs across the country.”

“It’s a clear vote of confidence in our workforce and our economy,” added the Chancellor.
