Institute of Motor Industry Calls For More Automotive Apprenticeships

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has called on businesses to offer more automotive apprenticeships for the UK’s young people.

With the Institute’s research showing that 2 in 3 young people would choose to start earning money rather than going to university, the IMI is encouraging the industry to attract talent to the sector at an early age by taking on more apprentices.

New car technology is forecast to create 320,000 new jobs such as analytics engineers, cyber security experts and 3D printing technicians in the United Kingdom over the next twelve years. However, the IMI says that there could be a skills shortage in the industry if more isn’t done to encourage new talent into a career in the sector.

The Institute of the Motor Industry issued a statement which said:

“With 67% of young people saying they would prefer to sidestep university in favour of earning money and 48% choosing to avoid student debt by opting for other choices such as an apprenticeship, the IMI is calling on businesses to take advantage of this by raising the awareness of the career opportunities available to young people.”

Commenting on the research, chief executive of the IMI, Steve Nash, said: “Employment in the motoring sector has increased by 11.9% in the last year. This highlights how the industry is providing a positive landscape for people searching for a new career.”

“The industry needs to build new learning environments and training programmes across all levels that can allow technicians to expand their skills, as well as attract new young people into these roles,” added Mr Nash.
