This week (5th to 9th March) is National Apprenticeship Week 2018! This year the five day apprenticeship celebration and showcase has a theme of ‘Apprenticeships Work’ and will feature hundreds of events throughout the week.

National Apprenticeship Week sets out the stall of all the benefits of doing an apprenticeship. Things like learning real skills on the job whilst earning a decent wage and working towards a qualification.

For young people who don’t want to go to university, whether because of a lack of funding or simply because they don’t fancy further education, apprenticeships are a great way into the workplace.

National Apprenticeship Week is designed to highlight how apprenticeships work for potential apprentices, employers, local communities and the wider UK economy. Organisers are hoping to speak to 10,000 people over the course of the Week in an effort to cast a spotlight on apprenticeships as a great career option for young people and a fantastic recruitment opportunity for employers too.

Kick starting what will be the 11th National Apprenticeship Week, Damian Hinds MP, Secretary of State for Education said: “Apprenticeships play a crucial role in helping people realise their potential as they learn and earn, and are providing employers with the skilled workforce our country needs.”

“This National Apprenticeship Week we want to show that apprenticeships offer a great route into skilled employment for people of all ages and backgrounds, so that everyone can access the excellent career opportunities apprenticeships offer,” added Mr Hinds.

Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, Sue Husband, said: “We want to see workforces represent the community they serve and it’s great to see committed employers develop strategies and programmes to extend the reach of their apprenticeship programme to socially diverse backgrounds.”

“I am looking forward to hearing more this week about what other employers have planned to ensure they open up their apprenticeship programmes to individuals who may not typically have considered them applicable and achievable themselves.”

“There’s no better way to mark apprenticeship achievement than by the apprenticeship community coming together and shouting loudly about the difference apprenticeships are making,” added Ms Husband.
