BAE Systems Launches New Masters-Level Engineering Apprenticeship

BAE Systems has teamed up with Cranfield University to offer a new masters-level engineering apprenticeship.

The new scheme, a first of its kind in the UK, starts on 8th January with an initial intake of 76 BAE Systems’ engineers.

The apprentices will work on modules such as cost engineering and operations management and will emerge with a level 7 apprenticeship qualification and a Masters degree.

Since all of the teaching modules will be taken online with Cranfield University the BAE Systems’ postgraduate apprentices will still be able to work full time learning new engineering skills on the job.

Once the students complete their apprenticeship they will receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering Competence, a major stepping stone towards gaining Chartered Engineering accreditation.

Twenty two year old Rebecca Jaggon is one of the first students to enrol on BAE Systems’ new postgraduate apprenticeship.

Explaining how and why she decided to sign up for the apprenticeship scheme, Ms Jaggon said: “I had just started the graduate scheme within BAE Systems when in September last year I was made aware of the academic opportunity with Cranfield University and was thrilled, as I was interested in completing another qualification but didn’t want to take time out of work to study.”

“The new programme offers the best of both, as the virtual learning programmes and lectures offer the flexibility to fit studying in around my current work schedule, while also enabling me to apply that knowledge directly to my day-to-day role within the Electronic Systems business,” said Ms Jaggon.

Speaking at the launch of the new BAE postgraduate engineering apprenticeship, Director of Manufacturing at Cranfield University, Professor Rajkumar Roy, said: “This innovative programme further strengthens Cranfield’s masters-level apprenticeship offering. Through online delivery, engineers will be able to study through both live interactive and ‘on-demand’ sessions. Working in partnership with BAE Systems allows us to tailor our educational programme to meet the needs of engineers and industry.”

BAE Systems’ Director of Education & Skills, Richard Hamer, also commented, saying: “We’re excited to be the trailblazer for this new qualification and we’re delighted that our graduate engineers are able to partner with such a prestigious institution as Cranfield.”

“As part of our ongoing commitment to nurture talent and high-end skills, the postgraduate diploma in engineering competence will allow our graduate engineers to apply their learning in a work-based context, with the assessment focused on competency rather than academic ability,” added Mr Hamer.

In addition to their new postgraduate engineering apprenticeship scheme, BAE Systems provides many other forms of apprenticeship across a range of disciplines. The firm took on 600 new apprentices last year and has around 650 apprenticeship places on offer again this year.
