Vodafone, the world’s second biggest mobile operator, has announced plans which will see it create over 2,000 new customer service jobs in England, Scotland and Wales.

The move is part of a wider investment of £2 billion over three years, as the company looks to improve its network and the services it offers its 18 million customers in the UK.

1,200 of the new vacancies will be within Vodafone’s internal customer service function, while a further 900 will be advertised by outsourcing companies which the global telecoms firm uses.

Manchester is the main beneficiary of the internal jobs with 800 vacancies to be advertised at its existing customer service centre in the North West city. Newark-on-trent and Stoke-on Trent will add around 150 Vodafone customer service reps each and Glasgow will gain 100.

Of the outsourced customer service functions, 600 will be in Newcastle, 200 in Scotland and 100 in Cardiff, Wales.

With Vodafone’s already providing jobs for around 3,700 customer service staff in the UK, with around 2 in 3 internally and 1 in 3 outsourced, the recruitment drive will see them getting close to a headcount of 6,000 customer service operatives before the end of 2019. Across all of its functions, Vodafone employs more than 12,000 people in the UK.

Commenting on the hundreds of new vacancies, Nick Jeffery, chief executive of Vodafone UK, said: “These new, skilled roles will make a real difference to our customers. Our ambition is to give our customers the best experience possible, providing an outstanding level of service and support as we continue to invest in building the biggest and best network in Britain.”

Karen Bradley, the secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, welcomed the announcement, saying: “Vodafone is one of our country's great international success stories and it's fantastic this global organisation is demonstrating its confidence in the UK by creating new jobs across the North, in the Midlands, in Scotland and in Wales.”

“We are working hard to create the right conditions for commercial investment in the UK, and today's announcement is proof that Britain is well and truly open for business,” added Ms Bradley.
