IKEA Announces Extra 100 Sheffield Jobs

IKEA, the Scandinavian furniture chain, has announced an extra 100 Sheffield jobs for a new superstore set to open later this year.

IKEA had already announced 380 full and part time retail jobs for their upcoming Sheffield store, but the dozens of extra positions are a further boost for the South Yorkshire city, with almost 500 vacancies now to be filled.

The 100 extra jobs will not be retail roles, but will be permanent call centre customer service positions.

Construction work is now under way at the former Tinsley Wire site and the new IKEA superstore should be ready to open its doors to customers in Sheffield in August or September.

Country retail manager for IKEA in the UK and Ireland, Gillian Drakeford, said: “This new store emphasises our commitment to UK expansion and investment. Our aim is to make IKEA as accessible to as many people as possible, and we are delighted to be able to bring our home-furnishing offer to Sheffield.”

Manager of the new Sheffield store, Garry Deakin said: “I can’t wait to open IKEA Sheffield and look forward to welcoming our new co-workers on board. We will aim to become an active part of the local community, while ensuring we provide the unique consumer experience that our customers have come to expect.”

Mr Deakin said that competition for the jobs could be competitive with over 1,500 people attending two recent recruitment open days advertising the Sheffield vacancies. The store manager said that he expected around 3,000 to 4,000 applications for the 480 jobs on offer in Sheffield and that they would all pay at least a 'real living wage' of £8.45 an hour.

Deputy leader of Sheffield Council, Leigh Bramall, welcomed the news, saying: “We know many people have been anticipating Ikea’s arrival in Sheffield. That’s why we’ve worked hard with Ikea to make this happen.

"The new store will redevelop a derelict site and bring jobs and investment to the city, whilst adding to Sheffield’s retail offer, so it’s great news,” added Councillor Bramall.

The Sheffield superstore will become IKEA’s 20th shop in the UK and Ireland once it opens. The Swedish chain has just announced that another store, subject to planning permission, will be opened during 2019 at Lancing in West Sussex, creating a further 875 jobs for the UK economy.
