Screwfix To Create 700 New Staffordshire Jobs

Power tool chain Screwfix is to take on a bespoke £50 million, 562,000 square foot distribution centre near Lichfield in a move which will create 700 full or part time jobs in Staffordshire.

The hardware firm already employs hundreds of people at a nearby warehouse in Stafford, but the new distribution facility on Prologis Park Fradley, set to be ready for action towards the end of next year, will provide jobs for many more staff over the next few years.

Shedding light on what roles will be available and when the new Staffordshire vacancies might be advertised, Screwfix’s director of supply chain, logistics and IT, Martin Lee, said: “We will initially be recruiting 200 new warehouse colleagues and drivers and the number of roles required will grow to 700 to support its growth plan, representing a significant employment opportunity for the local community.”

“The decision to construct a warehouse near Lichfield was taken to ensure we have the logistics infrastructure to support the needs of our expanding business. Adding one store per week to our network means we need to make sure we have the stock distribution in place to enable our busy trade customers to get what they want, when they need it from the nearest Screwfix, so they can get back to the job as quickly as possible,” added Mr Lee.

Managing director of Prologis UK, Andrew Griffiths, also commented on the DIY company’s move to his site, saying: “Prologis has a strong relationship with Screwfix, so we are delighted to be working with the company again to expand its operations in the West Midlands. Prologis Park Fradley is one of the few remaining locations in the region that can accommodate a building of this size because of the shortage of employment land in the West Midlands.”

Work will get underway on the new Screwfix facility before Christmas with funding for the development to be pumped in by Tritax Big Box REIT, a property investment group.

Screwfix, owned by Kingfisher PLC, which also owns DIY chain B&Q, employs around 7,000 people in a variety of roles in the UK. You can find out more about them on our company profile for Screwfix.
