Lidl To Create Hundreds Of Jobs In Yorkshire

Lidl, the German supermarket chain, is to open a huge warehouse at Verdion’s iPort development in Doncaster, a move which will create around 500 full and part time jobs in Yorkshire.

Lidl already has 12 warehouses completed or in construction across the UK, but the new one at Doncaster will come at a cost of £70 million and will span 58,400 square metres. The South Yorkshire distribution facility will supply Lidl stores in the North and will create hundreds of jobs for Doncaster in a number of different roles.

Building work will get under way next year and Lidl will join other big names like Amazon which also has a distribution facility at Verdion’s 337 acre iPort.

The new Doncaster jobs follow quickly in the footsteps of the 400 Southampton jobs which the German discount chain announced at the beginning of November.

Chief Executive Officer of Verdion’s iPort, Michael Hughes, said: “We are delighted to announce this significant signing to another well-known name. Lidl is a strong operator with great confidence in the region, bringing with it many new job opportunities for Doncaster and the surrounding areas.”

Head of warehouse expansion at Lidl in the UK’s, Adrienne Howells, said: “We are thrilled to be in a position to confirm our 13th distribution centre in Great Britain, bringing investment to Doncaster, new jobs and additional support to our existing and future stores in the north of England.”
