Redevelopment plans for Bircherley Green shopping centre could create dozens of new jobs in Hertford, if the green light if given for a new Premier Inn hotel at the site.

Potential developers Wrenbridge are hoping for a decision on the plans within the next couple of weeks, and, if approved, the company will build an 86 room Premier Inn at the shopping centre in Hertfordshire.

Around 90 full and part time hotel jobs would be created if the Premier Inn hotel development gets past by East Hertfordshire District Council, with a range of different roles to be made available.

Stuart Rose, Premier Inn’s acquisition manager, said: “We're looking to invest into Hertford and the Bircherley Green scheme, which would provide a great location and addition to the Premier Inn network.”

“Premier Inn is a multi-award winning brand which consistently delivers for our customers and for the locations where we do business. Being named Which? top hotel chain for a second year running last month as well as the success of our recently-opened hotel in Ware are good examples of that and we are confident we can make a successful contribution to Hertford as part of the Bircherley Green application,” added Mr Rose.

Conservative councillor at Hertford Town Council, Miss Jane Sartin, gave her backing to the Wrenbridge redevelopment plans, saying that the town was short on hotels in the budget price bracket.

However, not everyone in the local area is happy about the Premier Inn plan. Pam Marshall, manager of an existing guest house in the town, said: “I think it would be hideous for Hertford. If they take Waitrose away and put a Premier Inn there it would bring the town down. I just don't think it's what we want here.”
