Royal Elm Park Development Could Create 1,800 Jobs In Reading

A convention centre, hotel, restaurant and ice rink development at Royal Elm Park could create up to 1,800 Reading jobs according to the Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Around 800 temporary jobs in Reading would be created during the construction phase of the project along with a further 1,000 full time positions once the development is completed in six years’ time.

As well as the 5,000-visitor capacity convention centre, 250 bedroom hotel, cafes, restaurants and an ice rink, the plans also have provision for the building of over 600 new homes in this area of Reading.

A planning application is to be submitted by the developers before the end of 2016 and, if permission is granted for the project by Reading Borough Council, Thames Valley Berkshire LEP predicts that inward investment to the region could surge by 50 per cent.

Chief executive of Reading Football Club, Nigel Howe, said that bringing the scheme to fruition had been ‘a long and very detailed process’ but that it was ‘essential to the region’s future economic growth ambitions.’

“The stature and quality of businesses locating in Reading is phenomenal, but they are having to look elsewhere to hold major events. Royal Elm Park will be a fantastic new facility for Reading and it is being funded entirely privately, which represents a major benefit for the taxpayer,” said Mr Howe.

“I very much hope the opportunity that it presents, both for Reading and the wider Thames Valley region, together with a significant number of new jobs, homes and community facilities it will create, will enable it to move forward,” added Mr Howe.
