Bluewater Expansion To Create Over 2,000 Retail Jobs In Kent

Bluewater, the shopping centre between Dartford and Gravesend, has announced expansion proposals which it says will create over 2,000 retail jobs in Kent.

The plans include extra retail and restaurant floor space around the mall’s West Village covering an area of almost 28,000 square metres. If the proposals are passed by the council this summer, then work could get underway at Bluewater next year.

As well as creating temporary construction jobs while the extension is being built, bosses say that up to 2,300 retail vacancies could be added once the West Village expansion is complete.

Robert Goodman, the general manager for Bluewater, described the plans as an ‘exciting next step’ the evolution of the shopping centre.

“The plans reflect how consumer behaviour has changed, and anticipate how it is likely to do so over the next five to 10 years. The plans will bring many additional benefits to Dartford and the wider community. Not least of these is a major boost in employment, the provision of additional training to create a mobile and skilled local workforce, and the direct contributions to the local economy through increased business rates,” said Mr Goodman.

Dartford MP Gareth Johnson welcomed the plans, saying: “They address the needs of residents, visitors and the business community, and deal with an ever-growing array of competitors. The plans have also been devised with the community in mind, as evidenced by the commitment to deliver 2,300 new jobs.”
