Lidl, the German discount supermarket chain, has announced expansion plans which will see it create 300 new jobs in Scotland over the course of the next year.

The move will see Lidl take its headcount past 2,000 employees in the country as it opens eight of its pioneering ‘Lidl of the Future’ store formats in Scotland and makes improvements to ten further existing stores. The total investment across the eighteen stores will cost Lidl around £50 million over the next twelve months.

The new Lidl stores will be at Broughton, Craigmillar, Greenock, Hawick, Oban, Partick, Slateford and Stirling, with an average of over 35 jobs to be created as each new ‘Lidl of the Future’ opens its doors. By the end of the current expansion plan in Scotland, Lidl will be just one short of opening its hundredth supermarket in the country and will have raised its staffing levels by over 16 per cent from its current 1,800 employees north of the border.

Managing director for Lidl in Scotland, Ross Millar, said: “This latest phase in our growth is testament to the continued success of Lidl in Scotland. Our planned investment over the next 12 months signifies our commitment to Scotland and the fact that we are proud to serve Scotland with our best quality for the best price offering.”

“We have also set up a dedicated buying team in Scotland and we are working towards sourcing over 25 per cent of our products from Scottish suppliers,” added Mr Millar.
