House Of Fraser To Create 1,000 Peterborough Jobs

House of Fraser plans for a massive new distribution hub could create up to 1,000 new full or part time jobs in Peterborough.

The House of Fraser plans for the 750,000 square foot facility on the outskirts of the city have been fuelled by surging ecommerce at the retailer, which has seen that element of their business increase by more than a quarter in the most recent year of trading.

The warehouse, office complex and parking facility hub is set to be based at Great Haddon’s Gateway Peterborough distribution park, and, subject to approval from Peterborough City Council, could be ready for action in less than two years.

The House of Fraser distribution centre will be in constant use round the clock, offering flexible jobs for between 500 and 1,000 members of full or part time staff, according to the retailer’s projections.

Explaining the need for the new Peterborough distribution hub, House of Fraser chief executive officer, Nigel Oddy, said: “We have seen phenomenal growth of our ecommerce business. As a result of this growth, we need additional warehouse capacity to meet future supply chain needs and to meet demand for products from our customers.”

“After an extensive site search for an additional facility across the Midlands, we have submitted a planning application to develop a site in the Gateway Peterborough development,” added Mr Oddy.

House of Fraser’s executive director of commercial and logistics, Ray Kavanagh, offered his appreciation to the council for their cooperation, saying: “We are delighted to be working with Peterborough City Council and will be working closely with the local authority to ensure our proposals deliver on promises made at the outline stage of jobs, growth and investment in the local economy.”

Councillor John Holdich, Leader of Peterborough City Council and Cabinet Member for Education, Skills, and University, and Communications, welcomed the House of Fraser announcement, saying: “This is great news for Peterborough’s economy and a huge vote of confidence in our city. In the past three years Peterborough businesses have added almost 7,000 jobs to our economy and this commitment by one of the best known high street names is fantastic.”
