In a move to try and tackle cyber crime for its customers, companies and the government, BT has announced it is taking on 900 apprentices, graduates and tech security specialists over the next twelve months.

Around 170 of the new BT cyber crime jobs are earmarked as apprenticeships or graduate roles with a range of other positions to be filled as part of the other 730 vacancies. Some of the graduate and apprentice applicants will compete in simulations such as war games and hackathons in order to prove their credentials to BT.

The telecoms giant, which already employs around 2,500 staff in security roles, has a dedicated Security Academy where apprentices, graduates and other employees can train up in skills such as security operations, penetration testing, threat intelligence, physical security and related areas such as sales, risk assessment and risk management.

Explaining why they are taking on so many extra staff into this area of the business, President of BT Security, Mark Hughes,said, “A number of high-profile security and data breaches have dominated the headlines in recent months, and this has led to a surge in interest from both consumers and IT departments wanting to know how best they can protect themselves in the digital world.”

“BT plans to remain at the forefront, innovating in cybersecurity, by hiring some of the best talent while training up the next generation of experts at our BT Security Academy,” added Mr Hughes.

The majority of the new cyber security jobs at BT will be based in the UK, but some of the positions will also be based overseas, with potential vacancies to be seen in America, Europe and the Middle East.
