Rolls Royce is to create 350 Derby jobs at their factory in the city as the firm looks to increase production at the site.

Rolls Royce already employs around 8,000 people at their Derby base but will add to their headcount in the city over the next twelve months. Most of the positions will be new jobs according to Rolls Royce, but other vacancies will be filled by existing members of staff in Derby. With orders for their Trent XWB engine increasing, Rolls Royce need to ramp up production to meet demand.

A spokesman for Rolls Royce explained the logic behind the recruitment drive in Derby and reiterated the company’s commitment to keeping jobs in the United Kingdom, saying:

“As we ramp up production of the Trent XWB to deliver on £30 billion worth of orders, we are working with employee representatives to increase the size of the workforce involved in assembling the engine. Rolls-Royce is committed to the UK and we have announced well in excess of £400m of investment in new facilities here in the last couple of years alone, including £30m on the extension of our Trent XWB production facility in Derby.”

The news of the new vacancies at Rolls Royce is a welcome ray of light after the company cut over 2,500 jobs towards the end of 2014, many of them in Derby. Profits at Rolls Royce fell by over 10 percent last year and the company axed a further 200 managerial positions to try to get things back on track.
