3,000 More Amazon Christmas Jobs In Staffordshire

Amazon are to create 3,000 more full and part time jobs in Staffordshire as the retailer takes on extra staff at its Rugeley base in the last few weeks before the Christmas holidays.

The online retailer is, as always, hiring in big numbers in the run up to Christmas, with thousands of jobs up for grabs across its UK fulfilment centres. Over in the US, Amazon has taken on an extra 100,000 seasonal staff for Christmas 2015, up 25 percent on the 80,000 temporary workers that it took on last year.

In Rugeley, 400 Amazon jobs are to be filled this week alone and hundreds more vacancies will be advertised in the coming weeks as the company gears up for a hectic period of deliveries in the UK.

Commenting on the new Staffordshire jobs, Mick Grocott, chairman of Rugeley Town Council, said: “Any job is good, even if it is only festive work. There will always be the prospect of potential jobs coming off the back of this scheme. It's going to put money in people's pockets and is great for the rest of the economy in the Cannock Chase area.”

Likewise, David Gaye, another Rugeley councillor, said of the seasonal jobs at Amazon: “This is a massive boost to the area. Even if the jobs are temporary, it's a great sign for Rugeley, especially when companies like JCB are cutting back on staff.”

Councillor Jim Bowater also agreed, saying: “It's a great announcement for the local economy. 3,000 jobs being made available for this area alone is a huge number.”

Branch manager for a Job Centre in Wolverhampton which is helping with Amazon recruitment in the West Midlands region, Cathy Taylor, said: “Due to the high number of people needed, recruitment started back in a small way in July and August and is now building up to several hundred people a week leading up to Black Friday (27 November 2015). It's a huge recruitment operation that covers a wide area.”

In separate news from the mammoth online retailer today, it has emerged that Amazon could also create a further 2,000 new full or part time jobs in Leicestershire with a new fulfilment centre near Coalville. Developers Mountpark Logistics already have outline planning permission to build a facility measuring at least 960,000 square feet at the site and detailed plans were submitted to the council last week.

Initial noises from the council sound promising with Andrew Bridgen, the MP for North West Leicestershire, saying: “The potential to create more than 2,000 jobs is more good news for North West Leicestershire. It is a huge, long-term investment and a vote of confidence in the area. We are playing to the strengths of our strategic location at the centre of the UK.”
