Aldi is to create 400 new supermarket jobs in the North East and Shropshire over the next two years as the German chain expands its reach across the UK.

Around 300 Aldi jobs will be created in the North East, with Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and South Shields all set to benefit. A further 100 new jobs will be created at existing supermarkets in Shropshire, along with two further store openings in the county early next year.

Most of the entry level jobs which will be on offer at Aldi will be for stock assistants and store assistants. The firm will also be recruiting more experienced personnel as deputy store managers, assistant store managers and store managers in both the North East and Shropshire.

Commenting on the North East jobs and detailing what sort of candidate they were looking for, Aldi’s managing director for the region, Steve Barnett, said:

“Tyne and Wear is a key area of growth for us, and the popularity of our existing stores, as well as our planned expansion in the area, has created an immediate requirement for additional store staff, providing significant job opportunities for people across the county. We’re looking to attract applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds, including supermarket, fast-food and clothing chains, who can demonstrate relevant retail experience, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.”

As for the Shropshire roles, Jon Wilson, Aldi managing director for the county, said: “Aldi has seen an increase in customer numbers across its stores in Shropshire, which has allowed us to expand further with a new store in Newport, creating a significant number of job opportunities for people in the local area.”
