Shopping Centre Extension To Create 1,000 Aberdeen Retail Jobs

A huge expansion of the Union Square shopping centre could create as many as 1,000 retail jobs in Aberdeen if planning permission is given for a new extension.

A further 1,000 temporary jobs could also be created at the Aberdeen site in the construction phase of the proposed development, according to owners Hammerson.

The extension at Union Square would cost £200 million, and, in addition to new retail outlets, the plans include an IMAX cinema, a hotel and an expansion of car parking space.

A full planning application will be submitted to Aberdeen City Council before the end of this year and work could get underway at Union Square in 2017.

The 1,000 temporary construction jobs will probably be advertised from late next year, and the 1,000 retail positions will be filled when the shopping centre extension is complete - forecast to be some time during the first half of 2019.

Ryan Manson, general manager at Union Square, said: “We have consistently brought new and exciting brands to customers in the North-east and the proposed expansion plans will allow us to continue to do so in future.”

“As a key investor and employer in the city, it is important to ensure our plans provide maximum benefit to our customers and the local community. The council’s City Centre Masterplan provides us with a framework to ensure that we are delivering a plan, which will not just benefit the region economically but also enhance this inspirational destination for the Aberdeen community,” added Mr Manson.

Commenting on the Union Square proposals and the changing employment demographic in Aberdeen, Jenny Laing, leader of the council said: “There’s obviously been concerns about the downturn in the oil and gas sector but I think this application coming forward shows there is confidence in the retail and leisure sector in the city centre. A development of this size shows that the local economy remains buoyant. It’s a significant investment and I think it highlights the confidence that remains in the city of Aberdeen.”
