Alton Towers To Create 100 New Hotel Jobs

Alton Towers, the Staffordshire theme park, has announced plans for more accommodation on its site, in an expansion which would create around 100 new full and part time hotel jobs.

Alton Towers already features two hotels, but they will now, subject to planning permission being granted, add a third four storey hotel at a cost of millions. The hotel will feature over 70 rooms and restaurant with approximately 200 covers.

Alton Towers hopes that they can attract more and more people to stay at the theme park as customers who stay over add more value to the local economy than guests who visit with a day pass.

Staffordshire County Council’s Mark Winnington was thrilled by the theme park’s announcement, saying: “We welcome the news Alton Towers is expanding and bringing with it lots of new job opportunities. This is also great news for surrounding businesses. It will help position Staffordshire as one of the UK’s best tourist destinations.”

Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Enterprise Partnership’s chairman,David Frost, added: “Alton Towers is a major UK attraction and it is clearly now looking towards a long-term future. We need more hotels in Staffordshire so this application is welcome. Not only is it going to provide the extra beds but it will also create much-needed jobs.”

The theme park is still reeling from the roller coaster accident at the beginning of June which saw four people sustain serious injuries on The Smiler attraction. Following the incident, Alton Towers closed for five days and suffered from lower visitor numbers in the aftermath.

Alton Towers’ new plans will now go to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council for consideration of planning permission, but work could get underway on the new hotel as early as next year.
