More Uni Students Taking Part Time Jobs

A new survey by student insurance specialist Endsleigh has found that more and more undergraduates are finding part time jobs whilst studying at university.

Almost 80 per cent of uni students are now working in some capacity in order to earn enough to see them through their degree or help them secure a graduate job once they finish their course. That compares with fewer than 60 per cent of students who said they needed a part time job when the survey was last carried out 12 months ago.

Over half of the working students said that they were holding down a job simply to pay the bills, whilst a similar percentage said they needed extra cash for a more active social life at uni.

The average student who works while at university tends to earn a fraction over £400 a month, but there is a large imbalance between men and women. Women only earn an average of £334 a month, compared to £522 a month for their male counterparts.

Commenting on the survey’s new findings, Sara Newell, the current student & graduate business manager and head of student and graduate markets at Endsleigh, said: “We have seen a huge leap in the number of students finding employment whilst at university. While many still rely on their parents and student loans as main sources of finance, unexpected costs at university mean that many are looking for jobs to help ends meet.”

On a positive note, Ms Newell, added: “However, there is no doubt that being employed whilst at university serves a dual purpose and a considerable number of students are also looking to bulk up their CVs to enhance their future job prospects.”

Backing up Ms Newell’s thoughts on the future career benefits of holding down a job while at university, almost 90 per cent of the students working this year said that they were also doing it
