Watt Brothers, the Scottish department store chain, has announced expansion plans which will see it create 350 retail jobs in Glasgow and other parts of Scotland.

Watt Brothers is currently celebrating being in the business for 100 years, and employs around 500 people in full and part time retail roles in Scotland. The business retails in all manner of goods, from homeware to food and from beauty products to clothing.

The firm now plans to add a further six stores in Scotland, with at least one more being added in Glasgow. There are also plans to add more floor space at some of their existing retail outlets in Ayr, Clarkston and Livingston. The plans will take the number of Watt Brothers stores from eight to fourteen over the next few years.

Willie Watt, owner of the chain, said the business was experiencing positive growth in both sales figures and the number of customers coming through their doors, allowing them to expand even during the British recession. The chain is expected to post turnover figures in excess of £25 million this year and hopes to open two more stores before the end of 2015.

“Our business has changed dramatically since it first opened its doors in Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street, when the focus was exclusively on high-end ladies' fashions. We have evolved as a business and recognised that a retail offer including a wider range of great value products in a department store-style setting has greater appeal to today's consumer. My long-term plan is to have a total of 16 stores throughout Scotland, and we're constantly looking at new opportunities to secure ideal locations. If you are creating more employment it can only be a good thing,” added Mr Watt.
