Travis Perkins To Create 4,000 New Jobs & Apprenticeships

Travis Perkins, the building materials specialist which owns Wickes, has said it will create around 4,000 new jobs - including over 650 apprenticeships for young people in the UK.

Travis Perkins, which also owns the Benchmarx and Toolstation brands, will open around 100 new stores across its chains each year for the next four years, creating a thousand new opportunities every twelve months before the end of 2019.

Around 1 in 6 of the new positions created by Travis Perkins each year will be apprenticeships, meaning that the firm will create something like 170 new opportunities for apprentices every twelve months.

The four year expansion plan will see the UK’s biggest building materials retailer and wholesaler increase its presence from current levels of around 2,000 to approximately 2,400 - expanding its portfolio of Wickes, Benchmarx and Toolstation outlets by 20 per cent over the next 48 months.

Most of the new jobs and apprenticeships which Travis Perkins will create over the period will be outside of London and other parts of South East England, with many vacancies expected to be advertised in Coventry, Cardiff, Leeds, Northampton, Tilbury and Warrington.

The company took on over 1,500 new staff over the course of the last year and, now, in addition to the apprenticeships on offer, Travis Perkins will also advertise new opportunities for IT staff, branch managers, assistant managers and specialists in the supply chain for the building merchant trade. By the time the latest expansion plans are complete, Travis Perkins will employ around 28,000 staff in the United Kingdom in a variety of full and part time roles.

John Carter, chief executive of Travis Perkins said: “Our ability to create 4,000 new jobs reflects confidence in our businesses, the markets we operate in and the UK economy as whole. This confidence is supported by a number of actions taken by the Government over the past two years, including the new Help to Buy ISA announced yesterday, that are continuing to support construction activity and improvements in consumer confidence.”
