Finance & IT Sectors Driving Jobs & Salaries

Students who are interested in graduate jobs working in the finance or IT sectors will be happy to learn that the number of vacancies are increasing - and that salaries are growing in both of the two professions too.

New figures from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) show that IT and finance are the two sectors with the biggest increases in vacancies for job seekers year-on-year.

IT vacancies are up 31 per cent on an annualised basis, while finance and accounting jobs have increased by around 17 per cent in the last year.

Anticipated salaries are also rising strongly for both IT and finance graduates, with financial services wages up 5.3 per cent and IT pay up by 2.8 per cent. Engineering is the biggest force driving salary growth at the moment, though, with salaries in the sector up by more than 10 per cent year-on-year.

Ann Swain, chief executive of APSCo, said that the UK has a claim to be the fastest growing advanced economy in the world, an achievement which she said would undoubtedly have a positive impact on recruitment levels across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the future.

“The fact that vacancy numbers within finance are once again showing significant signs of improvement reflects the reality that the recession is now well and truly behind us. It seems that London has undoubtedly regained its crown as one the most eminent international financial centres, and the value that brings to the UK economy should not be under-estimated,” said Ms Swain.
